Zambezi are proudly supporting Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Drowning Prevention Week 2024 campaign.
This week we have tailored each of our swimming lessons, targeting water safety as a big focus and teaching the children how to stay safe in and around water.
Each lesson has started with a short talk through the Water Safety Code;
We asked the children to bring in an old t-shirt or pyjama top that they are happy to wear in the water, giving them an insight into how much trickier it can be if you fall into water with clothes on. The lesson also includes teaching and reminding children of the importance of FLOAT for life and that if they get tired or find themselves unexpectedly out of their depth to float on their backs and shout for HELP. Children learnt the different beach flags, practised reach rescues and learnt that they should not enter the water to rescue someone else. With our older swimmers they learnt the huddle position and the impact that cold water can have, we also reminded them that even though they may be a strong swimmer it is really important to still wear a lifejacket when taking part in water sports.
Drowning Prevention Week is not just for children its for the whole families to engage with and refresh their water safety knowledge. We want to encourage everyone to speak to your family about the Water Safety Code and give children the skills to enjoy a lifetime of fun in the water.
